BECU is sponsoring free community paper-shredding and electronics recycling event for the public 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, April 19, to reduce the risk of personal data being used for identity theft
The recycling event in Tukwila is at the BECU Tukwila Finance Center parking lot, 12770 Gateway Dr., Tukwila
Offered are free for shredding of up to three grocery bags, or two banker boxes, full of paper documents containing sensitive and personal information. Db Secure Shred a professional document destruction service with a mobile shredding unit will be at this location. Also recycle unwanted TVs, computers, computer monitors, laptops, and cell phones for free. There may be a small fee to recycle any other items. Exclusively at the Tukwila location, in conjunction with the event, BECU is hosting a Financial Safety Fair where residents can meet with experts and get valuable information on identity theft along with steps they can take to protect identities and details on what to do if they become a victim.
The first step to prevent identity theft is to protect personal and business information. Identity theft topped the FTC’s list of complaints again in 2013 coming in at over 290,016 complaints (out of 1.2 million) received between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2013.
