South 178th Street, the steep road leading up from Southcenter at Southcenter Parkway, is closed in anticipation of its replacement route opening in early November.

Contractors are doing the final paving and road markings on the new South 178th Street, which is weather dependent, and tying in utilities from the old to the new roadway.

As part of its Tukwila South development agreement, the city is moving South 178th South southward to where it will intersect with Southcenter Parkway at Segale Park Drive C.

The schedule calls for the new road to open to traffic on Nov. 2, but that timeline depends on the weather, according to Kimberly Matej, a spokeswoman for the City of Tukwila.

The realignment, she said, "serves as an integral part of improving roadway accessibility, safety and development."

The city's development plan, finalized in 2007, calls for using land near the current 178th Street for a new fire station.

As part of the development, the city extended Southcenter Parkway by 1.4 miles from South 180th Street to Orillia Road South. It opened in December.

The project is expected to provide up to 25,000 jobs, 1,700 housing units and 10 million square feet of office and retail space.

The Segale family owns most of the property along the new street and plans to develop the area.
