Thirteen Tukwila residents submitted applications by a Dec. 28 deadline, expressing interest in an appointment to an open Tukwila City Council seat.
Council Position 3 became open with the election of longtime City Council member Allan Ekberg as mayor in the November general election.
He officially assumed office on Jan. 1, but his ceremonial swearing in is at today’s (Monday, Jan. 4) City Council meeting at 7 p.m. City Hall council chambers.
Tukwila Municipal Court Judge Kimberly Walden will administer the oath to Ekberg, who will then swear in newly re-elected council members Kathy Hougardy, Dennis Robertson and Kate Kruller.
The appointment is to the final two years of Ekberg’s council term. The position is up for re-election in 2017.
At tonight’s council meeting, council members will discuss the sufficiency of the applications and scheduling of interviews.
The 13 individuals who submitted applications are in alphabetical order:

• Jun Castillo
• Laura Garris

The City Council will interview candidates on Monday, Jan. 11, and possibly at a second meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 13, with an executive session possible to review candidate qualifications.
The timeline calls for swearing in the new appointed council member on Tuesday, Jan. 19 (the day after Martin Luther King Jr. Day).
At today’s council meeting, the council also will elect a council president for 2016. Kruller is the outgoing president.
