A big bird, possibly a peacock or peahen, showed up Dec. 15 at the San Juan apartments in Tukwila and had residents wondering exactly what it was and where the bird had come from.
“It’s one of the strangest things I’ve seen in my 12 years here,” said Dave Lipke, an apartment maintenance worker. “It’s just been hanging out. We’ve been throwing it seeds.”
Lawrence Thomas first saw the bird after it had wandered into an apartment garage. The bird then exited the garage and walked around the courtyard as well as flower beds outside of the apartments in the 6200 block of South 153rd Street.
“I think it’s a female peacock,” Thomas said. “I fed it and thought about grabbing it but I don’t know what I would do with it.”
Neighbors thought maybe the bird had escaped from a nearby house where someone might have had it as a pet. The bird didn’t shy away from people and seemed comfortable even when several people looked at it and snapped its photo.
The bird featured a black body with orange and gold markings as well as a blue head.
No one knew for sure if the bird could fly or not.
